Embracing (The) Change!

Embrace (The) Change!

When I think of August, I think of CHANGE. It’s that time of year when summer sourpusses feel the need to constantly remind the rest of us that “summer is almost over!”.

As the days shorten, we prepare for the change of season by wrapping up summer vacations and hustling to finish back-to-school shopping. We may be sending our “babies” off to college for the first time or looking toward life as empty-nesters with bittersweet anticipation.

LIFE’S CHANGES.  Yes change is inevitable, at times unexpected and often unbearably difficult. Flashback to the first year of marriage or the endless feedings and sleepless nights of newly-minted parenthood. How about sending your firstborn off to full-day kindergarten, and then suddenly off to the first day of college a thousand miles away? Or perhaps it’s the adjustment to a recent and devastating medical diagnosis. Change can bring excitement and anxiety at the same time.

What change are you experiencing this season? Are you looking forward to the next phase of life with excitement, trepidation or a sense of ease? Do you view change as unpleasant endings or fresh new beginnings?

“THE CHANGE OF LIFE“.  As a gynecologist, I am regularly questioned about “The Change of Life“, also known as “The Change”.  While others may speak of “private summers” (my favorite!) or “mental-pause”,  MENOPAUSE is a major life change that eventually presents a challenge for most women.

Look for my next discussion: “Menopause: Not Men-on-pause!”

SYMPTOMS OF MENOPAUSE.  Although there are a few who profess to have “breezed” through menopause, 80% experience at least one very disturbing symptom during the transition.  While most  experience symptoms for 4-5 years, many will suffer for up to a decade and still some for up to 20 years!  The clincher is that few of us (only 1 in 4) will seek medical help for relief. Why?

The list of menopausal symptoms is long.  Typical complaints range  from abnormal bleeding and bladder leakage to sleep, mood and sexual disturbances.  This broad range of symptoms is the basis for the physical, mental and emotional impact experienced on the overall quality of life.

The decline in hormone levels and the eventual hormonal imbalance can lead to shifts in appetite and worrisome eating habits. These changes may result in a deficiency of essential vitamins and minerals and worsening hormone production. Long-term effects on overall health contribute to  elevations in cholesterol, obesity, cardiovascular disease and dementia.

MANAGING MENOPAUSE.  But don’t despair! Menopause can be safely and effectively managed through a wide range of solutions. When used appropriately, botanicals such as Don Quai and Black Cohosh can bring relief.   Various nutritional supplements and carefully monitored hormone replacement therapy (thyroid, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA) are among the options available for improving or eliminating menopausal symptoms. Even personal lifestyle adjustments aimed at optimizing nutrition, metabolism and sleep can help to  restore hormonal balance. Simply restoring nutrients such as  iron, magnesium and B vitamins can help achieve optimal hormone production and metabolism.

In addition to the pattern of symptoms, targeted  laboratory testing can help determine which solution best suits your needs and concerns.  A targeted health and wellness evaluation along with a customized treatment plan based on your symptoms and lab results can help get you back to optimal health and living at your very best.

Be encouraged. Now you can embrace “the change” as you prepare for the next amazing season of your life!
